University of West London
Signs Fit for the Past, Present and Future
The Challenge
With the university's new location, covering two buildings, the signage in place needed to be refreshed to ensure the buildings were easy to navigate and displayed the correct branding. The customer also wanted to make some developments to the drama school’s signage which reflected the style of its older Victorian-built building.
The Solution
At the new premises, situated on Uxbridge Road, FASTSIGNS made recommendations for opportunities to update signage, which would provide the establishment with a great visual makeover. These included renewing the building’s numbering system on its exterior.
At the building’s entrance, large window graphics are installed to attract attention, unmistakably branding the approach to the building. Other external signage includes informational free-standing signage situated in the car parking area. An illuminated totem, designed to create a strong visual impact at any time of the day and night, marks the university buildings, which are set back from Uxbridge Road. This double-sided sign, with internal illumination, stands 3.5m tall. This heavy-duty sign was lifted into place in the early hours of a Sunday morning due to its location in central London, the logistics for which our team managed to ensure a seamless installation process.
Internally, the signage provided brands the reception area with a large logo, creating a welcoming environment as staff, students and alumni enter the building. Internal wall graphics adorn corridors, providing directional information, which works in conjunction with room identification signage. Finally, safety signage and amenity informational signs, layer on functional elements to the solution delivered.
As an addition to the relocation project, the University of West London also required an exterior sign for its drama department. Housed in an architecturally significant building, the university considered installing a wooden sign which would complement the existing signage infrastructure. Although FASTSIGNS researched possibilities for this, due to wood being a porous substrate, FASTSIGNS advised their customer that the visual impact of the sign may diminish over time. As a solution, FASTSIGNS suggested a three-dimensional Victorian-inspired sign, manufactured with a cast fibreglass crest, which paid homage to an early version of the university’s logo, to elevate the sign to a new level.
The Result
FASTSIGNS delivered custom signs and graphics that balance the University of West London’s history and showcase their branding, within their new modern campus. FASTSIGNS created a visual solution fit for a university dedicated to its brand and student experience.
