School of Sociology and Social Policy
Depicting the Past Through Signs and Graphics
The Challenge
FASTSIGNS® worked in partnership with a local design agency to help Leeds University’s School of Sociology and Social Policy to install a multi-dimensional timeline graphic in time for an important faculty event.
The Solution
Having worked with other faculties in the University previously, FASTSIGNS was working with the Sociology department alongside a design agency, to implement a timeline across two floors of the department. Working to an initial brief, FASTSIGNS was simply creating and installing the signage. As the event drew closer, it became clear that part of the original design was not suitable for the event. With many signs already created and the opening night of the event only one week away, FASTSIGNS was able to use our design expertise to redesign and reorder this section of the signage display. FASTSIGNS’ intervention ensured a coherent timeline of visuals, depicting key historical events, throughout the available space.
Once FASTSIGNS stepped in to help amend the graphic plan, they produced and installed all of the required signage, including vinyl wall graphics applied directly to the wall. In order to add depth and a multi-level feel to the display, FASTSIGNS also used varying-thickness foam panels, cut to different sizes and shapes, and wrapped in printed vinyl, that showcased exhibition content. The innovative use of different thickness materials helped to position key information, helping it to stand out from other areas of the total installation.
The Result
The installation provides a history of social happenings that helps to immerse the students in their chosen area of study. Taking the initial concept of the design idea and utilising signage techniques FASTSIGNS turned this set of signs from a design concept into a work of art, ready for the event’s opening and as a key feature of the department for staff and students to enjoy.
