Creating a Cohesive Wayfinding Scheme
The Challenge
The redeveloped site, on the footprint of the old council building, is a busy multi-functional site. Home to two GP surgeries and several local council departments, the newly constructed Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) challenge was to create a cohesive wayfinding scheme that met the needs of all parties. Working with key stakeholders, Gloucestershire County Council, Gloucestershire NHS Trust and principal contractor, the Kier Group, this project required effective project and stakeholder management to reach a successful conclusion.
The Solution
The site layout is not intuitive and has to function for a variety of workers and visitors, many visiting either one of the GP surgeries or the CDC for the first time. This necessitated an effective wayfinding scheme to seamlessly guide the public and staff to their destinations.
FASTSIGNS® worked collaboratively with the managing architect and key stakeholders to design an effective signage scheme. The focus was on creating a harmonious visual style that would unify the site's diverse functions. Our signage expert’s solution was to install four freestanding monoliths which used a colour-coded design to act as a comprehensive directory for the various departments and buildings on the site. Thinking ahead, these monoliths were designed with individual panels that can easily be updated, ensuring longevity and flexibility.
The monoliths formed the basis of a site-wide directional signage system, which provided all site users with the information they required to reach their destinations with minimal help.
Further external signage includes signs that indicate designated parking bays to help all site visitors use the facility with ease.
Inside the Community Diagnostic Centre, FASTSIGNS® prioritised clarity, ensuring that the patient journey within the facility was simple and stress-free. Directional signs made with vinyl lettering were installed in strategic, visible locations to help people navigate the space easily.
Tactile door signage and projecting room signs were installed along the way to ensure accessibility for all. Frosted window manifestations were also applied to the windows to help with any discomfort which patients may feel towards the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, creating a sense of security for patients without compromising on the natural light in the building.
The Result
FASTSIGNS® delivered this project, managing the complex needs of multiple stakeholders and enhancing navigation and accessibility for those accessing the site. The cohesive and functional signage scheme we implemented has transformed the site's navigability, reinforcing its role as a welcoming and efficient community resource.
